Wellness Programs

Our Wellness Programs help you to adapt to change as you age and encourage you to find new activities, hobbies and interests to enjoy that enable you to stay physically and socially active while maintaining connections to the wider community. It is possible to take active actives to ensure that you can maintain your physical and emotional health and wellbeing.

What do we offer?

Following an assessment by JewishCare FirstCall or Burger Centre staff, an individual service plan will be developed that allows clients to get the best from the Burger Centre. Clients can also benefit from being referred to the Fit2Fit program within the Centre, which aims to prevent people having a first fall, by conducting a mobility and shoe assessment, and enabling clients to access relevant skills training, walking aids and correct fitting footwear. Research shows that preventing a first fall is a key feature in enabling people to live safely and independently age well in their own homes.

The Centre offers programs for both the frail aged and for those with special needs resulting from a stroke, dementia or other illness. The Centre can also offer respite for carers. There are moderate and high needs dementia days. Assessment will help determine which is the most appropriate day for the client.

There is a Russian specific day on Wednesday’s, which offers both frail aged and dementia specific programs.

A small fee applies for Burger Centre attendance. Those who cannot afford to pay will not be denied access to the Centre.

RETAINING SKILLS

All programs run at Burger Centre have a focus on retaining or improving existing skills.

For details of programs please contact us on 8345 9147. All Classes are kept to small numbers, maximum 12 to enhance social connection, wellness and participation independence.

HYDRO-CISE

The soothing warmth and buoyancy of warm water makes Hydro-cise a safe total body workout. Hydrocise classes are a gentle water exercise class conducted in the magnificent Eric Dreikurs Aquatic Centre, a purpose-built therapeutic pool and spa facility located onsite

Classes can support the relief of arthritic pain and stiffness, osteoporosis and back pain. The water supports joints and encourages freemovement, as well as providing support and resistance, which helps to build muscle strength. The spa adds to the experience after the class massaging your body, helping release tight muscles.

DANCE FOR PARKINSON’S CLASSES

Modelled after the Dance for Parkinson’s Disease Program developed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group, these dance classes are appropriate for anyone with PD. In chairs, supported, or standing, you will explore elements of dance in a stimulating, enjoyable, nonpressured, social environment. These classes are open to partners, family members, carers and community members.

FIT2FIT

The Fit2Fit Program aims to support senior community members to remain living independently and enjoy quality-of-life by preventing falls. Research shows that preventing a first fall is a key feature in enabling people to live safely and well. Our occupational therapists will conduct a mobility and shoe assessment, making recommendations on skill training, walking aids and footwear. We will work with you to achieve the outcomes you strive towards in a friendly and respectful way.

Classes are one hour in duration with refreshments and opportunities to socialise afterwards.

Social Connections

Having a lack of social interaction is related to negative impacts on health and wellness, particularly for older people. To prevent isolation and to contribute to better psychological and physical wellbeing, we coordinate a range of activities including day trips to extend social connections and keep people healthy and active. Our activities are designed around common interests with other like-minded people.

JewishCare also offer a range of free programs to help keep you connected which you can find here .

Centre based respite and carer support

Our respite program is great for those wanting to maintain independence and social connections, providing a secure supportive environment to be yourself. Being involved in the respite programs at the Burger Centre gives opportunities to participate in indoor and outdoor pursuits including gardening, snooker, bowls, art gallery tours, concerts, current affairs discussions to name a few. This gives family carers an opportunity to continue to work, volunteer or pursuit their own interests at the same time.

Door to door transport, morning and lunch makes our respite program an easy choice.

We are proud to offer designated Russian programs on Wednesday. The programs are run in both our centre-based respite and social support programs. All staff and volunteers on this day are bi-lingual speakers and have Russian heritage.
